Supposedly, he hopes that this will make them work better together to defend the planet in his absence.Īnd the other newbie Green Lantern would be Jessica Cruz. And after failing that training, Hal Jordan combined the duo's rings into one, which made them only chargeable when the two are together. ![]() ![]() While being questioned by authorities, Sinestro's Green Lantern ring chose Simon as its next ring bearer, recruiting him into the Green Lantern Corps.Īfter a few turns in his superhero career, he was put under training with Hal Jordan, together with the other newbie Green Lantern of Earth. He first appeared in The New 52! FCBD #1 (2012) before making his first full appearance in Green Lantern #0.īaz was caught by the police street racing in a stolen car with an armed bomb in the back of the van. Simon Baz is a Lebanese American Muslim from the Detroit suburb of Dearborn, Michigan. Marine from Detroit, Michigan, who was selected by the Guardians as a backup Green Lantern to then-current Green Lantern Hal Jordan, after the previous backup, Guy Gardner, was seriously injured after getting hit by a car while trying to save a civilian.Īs we enter the 1990s, we see more and more new characters created to join the Green Lantern Corps like it is the Mickey Mouse Club. John Stewart is an architect and veteran U.S. The character was created by Dennis O'Neil and Neal Adams. There is a third Green Lantern called John Stewart, first appeared in Green Lantern/Green Arrow #87 volume 2 (1971). Suffering some ups and downs mentally and physically, losing his power ring at one time and renaming himself the Warrior, he eventually returned to the Corps and was being assigned a very major role by the Guardians. At a time he even tried to resent Batman's leadership of the group, going so far as to challenge the Dark Knight to a fist fight Batman immediately downed Guy with one punch. Gardner became a founding member of the Justice League International after the original JLA disbanded. When Hal Jordan became the Green Lantern, Guy was made his backup, and the two became close friends. His father, Roland was an abusive alcoholic who beat Guy every day. Guy was raised in Baltimore by his parents, Roland and Peggy Gardner. He was said to be one of the 2 suitable candidates the lantern detected when the original alien owner died on Earth. Guy Gardener first appeared in Green Lantern vol. ![]() The life of Jordan was rather eventful after gaining the ring to become Green Lantern, one which saw him losing the entire hometown of Coast City, getting possessed by an evil ancient source named Parallax, and merging with Spectre to regain himself. He received his ring from a dying alien and was commissioned as an officer of the Green Lantern Corps, an interstellar law enforcement agency overseen by the Guardians of the Universe. Hal Jordan was a second-generation test pilot, having followed in the footsteps of his father. This version of Green Lantern has absolutely no relation to the old one. In 1959, Harold "Hal" Jordan was being introduced as the new Green Lantern in Showcase #22, created by Julius Schwartz. But after WWII, the general interest in Superheroes declined and not long after the character resurfaced, he was renamed the "Sentinel", to distinguish him from the more popular modern day Green Lantern. The superhero went on to form the Justice Society of America with several other heroes of that time. The limitations of the ring were that it had to be "charged" every 24 hours by touching it to the lantern for a time, and that it could not directly affect objects made of wood. From this, he crafted a magic ring which gave him a wide variety of powers. He is a railroad engineer from New York who, after a railway crash, came into possession of a magic lantern which spoke to him and said it would bring power. The original Green Lantern in 1940 is called Alan Scott. ![]() ![]() ![]() We will first separate out the elements based on the forward slash ( ”/”), which separates the different parts of the file path. In Python, we can use the “split” function to do this. In order to construct a track number with this format for the ID3 tag, we need to identify the file name contained in the last part of our complete file path ( ‘01 - Bad Religion - Do What You Want.mp3’ in the example above), and extract the track number from it. ‘07/12’ for the 7th song on a 12-track album). The first part is the track number of the song itself, and the second part is the total number of songs (e.g. The track number in an ID3 tag should contain two parts, separated by a forward slash (/). Constructing a Track Number (with the Proper Format) As we can see from the above example, the mp3 file name is such that the first two characters represent the track number ( ‘01’ in the example above). This is good - we have extracted both the file path and the file name. 1/01 - Bad Religion - Do What You Want.mp3' '/media/user/My Passport/ID3/1994 - Punk-O-Rama vol. ![]() We print the first element of filez, which returns: 1/*.mp3" ) # print the first element of filez: glob ( "/media/user/My Passport/ID3/1994 - Punk-O-Rama vol. We first want to extract the file paths for the mp3s in our compilation album folder, which we’ll store in an object called “ filez”: 2 # extract the file names (including folders)įilez = glob. # load the libraries that we'll useįrom mutagen.mp3 import MP3 from mutagen.easyid3 import EasyID3 import mutagen.id3 from mutagen.id3 import ID3, TIT2, TIT3, TALB, TPE1, TRCK, TYER import glob import numpy as np Let’s first import the libraries that we’ll use, including a number of sub-routines from the mutagen library, which will allow us to read and edit mp3 meta-data (e.g. I put together my approach based on this very helpful StackOverflow response, which describes the basics of editing ID3 tags in Python using the mutagen library. Other software is available for this purpose, but I thought it would be an interesting problem to solve using Python. In the end, I wasn’t able to edit all the tags in the proper way using this program. I’ll mention that I first tried to fix the ID3 tags via Windows Media Player, but found the program extremely difficult to use for this purpose. While we are at it, we will also make sure that the songs are given the appropriate track number in the ID3 tag. Therefore, if we set the ‘albumartist’ tag (and the ‘album’ tag) to be identical for all songs on the compilation album, Google Play should be able to recognize the songs as belonging to the same album, and group them in the same album folder within the app. It’s doing this on the assumption that there might be multiple albums by different artists that shouldn’t be merged.” If this does not exist, it looks for ‘ARTIST.’ If you have a compilation album… and no ALBUMARTIST tag is set, it will split the album into as many copies as there are different artists. What meta-data does Google Play use to assign songs to albums?Īccording to this helpful Reddit post, Google Play first “looks for the ‘ALBUMARTIST’ tag first. ID3 tags are meta-data associated with mp3’s which allow “ information such as the title, artist, album, track number, and other information about the file to be stored in the file itself.” Essentially, the meta-data associated with the mp3 files on the compilation were originally set in such a way that the Google Play app could not figure out that all the songs belong on the same album. The heart of the problem, as mentioned above, is the ID3 tags attached to the mp3’s themselves. The end result was that, in the Google Play music app on my phone, the songs were represented in a number of different album folders, making it necessary to constantly switch between them if I wanted to listen to the compilation from front-to-back. ![]() Much to my dismay, the ID3 tags were formatted in such a way that Google Play did not recognize the 16 songs as belonging to the same album. I put the album on my phone in order to listen to it via Google Play, the built-in mp3 player on the Android system. I was given a compilation album (the first volume of the Punk-O-Rama series) in mp3 format. The goal will be to harmonize meta-data for all mp3 files which belong to a single album. Specifically, I’ll be using Python to edit the meta-data (e.g., the ID3 tags, which contain information on the artist, album, song, etc.) attached to mp3 files. In this post, we’ll still be dealing with data, but less on the analysis side and more on the management side. Typically, on this blog I write about data analysis. In this post, I’d like to do something a little bit different. ![]() ![]() ![]() It is unclear what precipitated the tremendous population growth associated with this second occupation of the Near East and subsequent dispersal ( 7) possibly, cultural advances accumulated to a “tipping point” that supported extreme demographic growth ( 8), or anatomical changes that are not reflected in the paleoanthropological record occurred in the ancestral population. Only after this point do anatomically and behaviorally modern human remains become widespread in Eurasia. It is not until at least 50,000 y ago that evidence of behaviorally modern humans occurs in the archaeological record in the Near East. However, current evidence indicates that this near-modern population did not persist in the Near East and was subsequently replaced by Neanderthals during the following glacial period, with little evidence of temporal overlap ( 5, 6). It is clear that anatomically near-modern humans occupied the Levant ( 4) during a warm interglacial period 130 to 80 kya, when this region was ecologically similar to northeastern Africa ( 5). It is important first to distinguish between the presence of early near-modern humans in the Near East and the very distinct OOA exit associated with the Great Expansion. ![]() How do we reconcile this major demic expansion with the population stability that followed for thousands years until the inventions of agriculture? We review advances in understanding the genetic diversity within Africa and the great human expansion out of Africa and offer hypotheses that can help to establish a more synthetic view of modern human evolution. It should be appreciated that the initial expansion and subsequent serial founder effect were determined by demographic and sociocultural factors associated with hunter-gatherer populations. These two patterns are relevant for medical genetic studies mapping genotypes to phenotypes and for inferring the power of natural selection in human history. This particular population history gave rise to the two defining features of genetic variation in humans: genomes from the substructured populations of Africa retain an exceptional number of unique variants, and there is a dramatic reduction in genetic diversity within populations living outside of Africa. Genomic data from contemporary humans suggest that this expansion was accompanied by a continuous loss of genetic diversity, a result of what is called the “serial founder effect.” In addition to genomic data, the serial founder effect model is now supported by the genetics of human parasites, morphology, and linguistics. Educators are free to pick and choose what topics to cover, and how deeply to pursue these topics.Genetic and paleoanthropological evidence is in accord that today’s human population is the result of a great demic (demographic and geographic) expansion that began approximately 45,000 to 60,000 y ago in Africa and rapidly resulted in human occupation of almost all of the Earth’s habitable regions. Ergo, we are able to offer items on topics not always (or ever) covered in any great depth in high school classes. We are not bound by what can be contained within a physical textbook.
